How To Pay

Fare Collection Policy

Fares are collected as the rider boards on an inbound, or Downtown-bound, trip and as the rider exits the outbound, or suburban-bound, trip.

This policy is in effect at all times on the T and until 7:00 p.m. on Port Authority buses, and is in place to ensure that riders load and unload quickly and efficiently.

On buses with scheduled outbound Downtown departures after 7:00 p.m. and before 4:00 a.m., fares are collected as the rider boards the bus.

Exceptions

  • Monongahela Incline:  Pay at Grandview Avenue (Upper Station)
  • Duquesne Incline:  Pay at Carson Street (Lower Station)

The following bus routes are always pay upon entry:

  • 6D - Spring Looper
  • 28X - Airport Flyer
  • 33X - West Busway-All Stops
  • 100 - West Busway-All Stops
  • 54C - North Side-Oakland-South Side-Strip District
  • Special event shuttles and regional express routes
  • All routes that do not enter Downtown Pittsburgh, except EBO, which is inbound pay enter and outbound pay leave.

Because Port Authority operators neither carry change nor make change, riders must pay exact fare or pay an amount in excess of the prevailing fare. All cash, coins and tickets must be deposited in the fare box by the rider.

Fare Evasion

All persons determined to be using fraudulent fare instruments will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
